talking
The dance floor is a no-talking zone. This is again done to remove any distractions and to allow for dropping in more fully. If you need to have a conversation, however brief, please step out into the hallway or go outside.
If you witness a conversation happening, you are welcome to gently remind people of this request (with a gesture). (sounds are welcome within reasonable respect of the ears of those around you)
respect
We agree to respect our own bodies and the bodies of others. Listen to your own limits and what you need at any given time. Be mindful of large movements close to other bodies, big sounds close to other people’s ears and an aim to hold others with acceptance regardless of differences or background connection.
sobriety
Dance Temple is a ‘sober’ space. We encourage you to be fully lucid while attending dance. Ultimately, sobriety is this is the aim of the dance itself, the long journey to being ok with yourself as you are. In this we acknowledge that some people need to medicate themselves in various ways, but ask for discretion and grounded presence in and around the space of Dance Temple.
dancing & consent
Enjoy your own personal dance or spark up creative movement with others, if there is mutual agreement. If you wish to dance with another, tune into their body language that will clearly give you a ‘yes’ or ‘no’. Respect that a person’s willingness to dance can change from moment to moment. At any time you, or the person you are dancing with, may choose to end the encounter by moving away, or bowing with hands in prayer.
cell phone use
We request a ‘no cell phone use’ policy in the dance space.
If you need to use your device, there is lots of space in the hallways or outdoors to use your phone.
documentation
No photos or video in the space unless arranged for and consented to by the whole community
kids
Parents are asked to kindly monitor their kids and keep them close (at arm’s reach). Please support us with requesting your children be mindful of their voices during opening and closing.
footwear
Please go barefoot or wear only indoor shoes or sneakers in the dance space.
other agreements
***There may also be additional agreements that are important at specific Dance Temples surrounding bringing your own instruments, shirts on for all genders, no scents, other offerings before or after dance temple and more
There may also be land acknowledgements and statements about inclusivity.
other notes
The Dance Temple Collective are always available for any feedback, questions, or comments.
The Dance Temple collective and board of directors reserves the right to uninvite individuals from the space if people are feeling unsafe with their presence. In the event this cannot be respected, we will call in greater structural support.
The definition of what is safer is determined in conversation with the individuals effected and at the discretion of the collective.
We do also have a protocol in place for when conflict arises between people at dance. Please inquire for that info.
